This is crazy fourteen weeks done, ds106 is over! This past week Alaina, Ashleigh, and I finalized our project! Our project continued our radio show theme and content.
For our final project we created a tumblr that served as our radio show Distress Signal’s online news presence. This week we proof read our news articles which consisted of a post introducing us as hosts, and introduction article, an article for each of our superheros, and finally a concluding “where are they now” article. Then since tumblr works as the most recent post goes to the top we had to carefully organize the order of our posts. Then mainly this week we filmed and edited our video interviews. This was a major component of our project so we spent a lot of time making those center pieces for our “website”. We met three times this week to really help create a cohesive flow for our interview videos even though we all filmed them separately. We did this by having the same intro/outro and also by having matching text subtitles on our videos.
Overall our tumblr looks very official, and the content on our page is extremely thought out and related into not only our characters but our radio show project as well! I love our finished project because it incorporates so many different aspects of the topics we covered throughout this course!
Special shout out to Alaina and Ashleigh for helping make both of these projects so awesome!

Before taking this class you need to understand that although it is an online class and it has a lot of fun and creative components it is extremely time consuming. You must dedicate around 4-6 hours a week to completing the various assignments due at the end of every week. On top of that for me personally a lot of the material was new to me. This added another huge time component for me because I had to do a lot of research and guess and check work for how to complete different assignments before I even started completing the work itself.
Although it was a big time commitment the work is fun, creative, and very different from the work you complete in a normal class making it more enjoyable to do. I really loved how much material this class covered in regards to learning how to use a variety of media and editing techniques. I was forced out of my comfort zone to use so many different tools and now I know how to use them confidently.
I highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to sharpen or even begin to work on increasing their skills within the multi-media world.
P.S Do not procrastinate trust me!!!!
For this final crisis the distress signal radio show team decided to team back up! That means Ashleigh, Alaina, and I are working in a group for this final project!
For our final crisis we decided to continue with our radio show Distress Signal since we loved our story line and final product so much.
Basically our idea is to create a tumblr page that acts as our radio show’s online presence! Our plan is to create a news web series that follows up the aftermath of Dr.Evil’s attack on the city that occurred during our radio show. This will include 5 news article posts. Each news article will contain a writing element, a video element, visual element, and an audio element embedded within the news summary.
The first news article will state a more general summary such as a recap of the events that took place during our radio show when Dr.Evil attacked the city, and will incorporate all three of our class characters who loose their powers due to Dr.Evil’s attack on the city. The the following three news articles will be exclusives with each of our superhero characters. These news articles will incorporate interviews about the actual event that took place and how they are doing now without their super powers. The final news article will be a “Where are they now” 5 years later follow up piece. This will give brief summaries about what are all of our characters doing now with their lives.
Our project will incorporate the following elements from our class:
- Web Storytelling
The first thing I did this week was my Mashup assignment stars!
First: I’m Ready for My Closeup (4 1/2 stars)
I’m Ready for my Closeup
Second: Holiday Mashup (4 stars)
Little Brain’s Fav Holiday Mashup
Third: Photo Mash (3 1/2 stars)
Then I decided to create a tutorial right after completing a new assignment that way the steps and process I followed were extremely fresh in my mind! So right after I finished my first mashup assignment I completed my tutorial as well! Hope this helps any future ds106’ers with Mashup week!
I’m Ready for My Closeup Tutorial
Then I did my first remix assignment of the week! I remixed Places of Peace assignment and the remix card said “subtle swticheroo”.
REMIXXX! Places of Peace
Then for my second remix assignment I decided to remix a new assignment one I had never seen or done before! I remixed Destination Post Card assignment! The remix card said “Stache It”, can you guess what that means?
REMIXXX #2! Destination Post Card
Lastly this week I completed my two daily creates!
First: 1 Red element
To complete this assignment I first took a picture of an object that is red, so I decided upon an apple! Then I used the app color splash. This app makes it really easy because it turns the image all black and white, and then you get to highlight the parts of the image you want to revert back to its original color! Resulting in a color splashed image!
Second: ds106 in real life
And finally commenting!!
Jokers meet Pollack
Ramsay is ready for his close up
So the original point of this assignment is to create a post card for some travel destination! Since I love to travel I decided to chose this assignment to remix! The remix card read: “Stache It”. The goal of the remixed assignment is to add a mustache into the assignment somehow. To complete this assignment I first decided to just create a normal post card and then add the mustache in post card creation! I created my normal post card by editing an image that I had in my camera roll from a previous trip I had taken. I edited the image in snapchat by adding text onto the image, and a few “sticker” icon images to add to the post card vibe. Then to incorporate the remix aspect of this assignment I used Pasteify my favorite cropping/photoshopping app to overlay a mustache image into my destination postcard! Then I shared my final image on twitter! Hope you consider Costa Rica for your next vacation!
For my first remix assignment this week I chose an assignment I have previously completed. I loved completing the original so I decided to remix Places of Peace! The remix card read “Subtle Switcheroo”. Its goal was to just make one or two slight subtle changes to the assignment. I decided to complete 2 small changes to the assignment, see if you can guess the changes based on my completion of the remixed assignment!
Here were my two subtle switcheroo’s: Places of peace were changed to people that make you feel at peace, and instead of posting it to twitter you need to share it to flickr! Very subtle changes, did you guess them correctly?
The last Mashup assignment I completed for this week was the Photo Mash assignment worth 3 1/2 stars! The idea of this assignment was to combine 2 different actors into one image that actually makes sense and looks normal! For this I chose to pick two classic “School Mean Girls” and have them competing for Queen of the high school halls.
To complete this assignment I googled image searched classic movie mean girls and came up with two of my personal favorites, Regina George from Mean Girls and Lana from Princess Diaries. Once I had my two mean girl pictures I used photo shop to add them both to a background image of school lockers. To make the photo look realistic as the assignment wants I carefully chose two images that look similar. By this I mean I picked images of the two girls posing similarly, looking in the same direction, and had similar coloring allowing for a much simpler edit. I also chose the background image as a background that they have in common, high school hallway lockers! Then I tweeted my final product!
Since the holiday season is about to be in full swing I thought what a perfect time to do this assignment. It is worth 4 stars, and is super fun!
To start I picked my character Little Brain’s three favorite holidays to mashup. His favorite holidays are Christmas because he can always read his parents minds and figure out his presents. The Forth of July because he is amazed by the chemistry of the fireworks. And lastly Halloween because he can read the people’s minds to figure out who they are even though they are wearing masks and costumes! To start I googled images for each of these holidays to crop together. Here are the originals…
Then I used my favorite editing app Pasteify! Although this app only allows you to crop two images together at one time it is so simple and easy to use that I often use it multiple times!
First I combined the Christmas tree picture and the firework picture together using the standard Pasteify app 3 step system (choosing a background, highlighting the parts of the foreground you want to keep, and combining the two into one cropped image). Then once I had those two images combined into one I used that new image and cropped the pumpkin into it using the same 3 step system within the Pasteify app. It sounds complicated, but it is so simple and took me 5 minutes tops! Here is my final product! I really wanted the image to look like one complete picture. I used the firework for Forth of July as the Christmas tree star, and the Halloween pumpkin as a gift under the tree! I am pretty happy with the overall Holiday Mashup!
This assignment may seem a little challenging because of it’s star rating (4 1/2 stars), but if you have the right tools it becomes an extremely easy and fun assignment!
First thing to do is to decide on the images you would like to use. You will need one image that contains a dramatic close up of an individuals face! For example, when I completed this assignment I chose the classic image of Ryan Gosling in the pouring rain from The Notebook.
The next image you will need to complete this assignment is an image for the background. This image could fit the scene and just be from a different movie/show, or it could be completely out of the blue! It is your choice so get creative. For my assignment I decided to get super creative mashing up photos and chose an image of a basket of puppies.
Next step is to combine your photos. You can do this with photoshop, or many apps. I recommend using Pasteify. It is extremely simple and effective when you want to photoshop two images together.
First Step of using Pasteify: Chose image to be your background (fun background)
Second Step of using Pasteify: Cut out your overlay image (dramatic closeup)
To complete this you use your figure to highlight the parts of this image you want to keep! This is an important note, you only highlight (in red) the parts you want to KEEP!
Third step of using Pasteify: Combine the two images. You can drag the cropped overlay image with your finger, increase or decrease the size, and lastly position it where you want it on your background.
Last step is to save or share your image from the app! Final result an awesome and hilarious mashup photo.
Hope this helps all of you tackle the “I’m Ready for My Closeup” Mashup assignment! Good Luck Everyone!!
For my first mashup assignment this week I chose the I’m Ready for my Closeup assignment worth 4 1/2 stars. I thought the juxtaposition this assignment allows for was quite humorous and that is what originally drew me to complete it.
To complete this assignment I first decided on an image for the dramatic closeup. I ended up picking a photo of Ryan Gosling from the movie The Notebook. I chose this image because it is the epitome of drama. He is standing out in the pouring rain trying to win the love of his life back. Once I chose the image I then picked a photo for the background. Like I previously mentioned I really wanted the dramatic close up to juxtapose the background so I picked the cutest picture I could fine, a basket full of puppies. Then once I had my two images chosen I used the app Pasteify to crop the two images together! Then I tweeted my final product here it is!
