What makes a superhero story so super?

To begin this assignment I read “How Ancient Legends Gave Birth to Modern Superheroes”  watched the very first Superman cartoon (I had never seen any of the original Superman cartoons before), and watched Kurt Vonnegut’s talk on the shapes of stories. I found the article by Evan Narcisse to be extremely interesting. I really enjoy the idea of superhero’s being on a diverse spectrum, not just a yes or no qualification. It is not just having powers or wearing a cape that constitutes someone to be a superhero. The genre of science fiction specifically in regards to superhero characters has created a classic look and idea that comes to mind when someone thinks of a superhero. The most common things that you see within this genre are individuals with superhuman powers, a strong moral compass, good intentions, and usually a costume. Many of these are big deal breakers for people when deciding if someone is a superhero or not.

For me I personally agree with the idea that superheros are on a spectrum because not all of them can fit into that one box, but that does not make them any less super. For example one of my favorite newer science-fiction movies Deadpool. Realistically Deadpool is not the classic halo wearing superhero who always does the right thing. Deadpool was just some average hired gun, technically a bad guy. Then something terrible happens to him causing him to have the supernatural ability to regenerate and heal his body. Deadpool uses this ability to destroy the man who is torturing other people and creating human weapons that threaten the general population. Again technically he does a lot of wrong to get to that positive end goal, and he might be doing it for mostly selfish reasons, but I consider him to be a superhero because he uses his extraordinary gifts to help people, and hinder the bad guy.

This superheo story follows exactly what Kurt Vonnegut explained in his youtube video on the shape of stories. A Deadpool starts at a level of health and happiness, and through out the course of the movie his happiness and health level drop dramatically when he is diagnosed with an untreatable form of cancer and leaves his girlfriend. Then it comes right back up by the end of the movie due to his new abilities and the reuniting of his love. This arch and story shape is clearly crucial to all story lines, including superhero stories.

To me a superhero and a superhero story needs to have an individual who uses their extraordinary circumstance whether that be superhuman powers, incredible resources such as wealth or technology, etc to help people against a person trying to hurt the general population. That is what makes a character super to me.

Weekly Summary: Take 2

This week was jam packed with new learning opportunities and activities. First off I put some more time and customization into my blog. I tried out a few of the different themes, but a lot of them looked to cluttered and messy for my preference so I actually ended up going back to my original theme. After that I went in a changed up my blog title adding some more creativity and switched up my colors for my blog page. Lastly, I added all the plug-ins to help my blog run smoother! I’m pretty happy with the results of my blog right now, but who knows I might change my mind next week!

Then I tackled the new project of daily creates. I found this to be the easiest and the most fun of all the new assignments we worked with this week. I created a blog post of all three of my daily creates and the process I went through during this week!

Daily Creates

Next for the week I worked in the ds106 assignment bank. I enjoyed doing projects from the assignment bank because they challenged me a bit to get out of my comfort zone and experiment in new/creative ways I haven’t had to yet. I also really liked that they took a little more effort than the daily creates, but weren’t taking me hours to complete. I created a blog post for each of my assignment bank projects and the steps I took to get to the finished project! My favorite project to complete was the Audio assignment I did, check it out!!

Then for my struggles of this week! I had a tough time really getting involved with commenting and being active with other students. Since I really do not know anyone in this course I felt strange commenting on their blog posts, but then I figured I will never know them if I don’t. So near the end of this week I started commenting on some blogs, and I have been way more active on twitter with some of the daily create posts/conversations. Here is one of the blogs I left a comment on this week, I also commented on Olivia Breler’s weekly summary blog post, but I can not seem to get that to appear on my post properly (sorry for the technical difficulties) …hopefully there will be more to come!

First My Mother, Forever My Friend

Then my other struggle of the week was the groups google doc assignment. I pretty easily posted about my thoughts about previous assignments in the assignment bank, because I quickly realized what type of projects I enjoyed doing and which ones I did not like with the web storytelling category my group was assigned. I also found it pretty easy to make my own assignment for the Web storytelling assignment bank after looking through what was already there it helped spark some creative ideas. I created the Photo through different lens assignment, try it out and tell me what you think! So what I found most difficult about this part of this weeks assignment was the sharing of ideas and collaboration. There was little to no participation from the rest of my group which made it hard to bounce ideas off of people. Hopefully the more work we do in these groups the more activity there will be and the better the ideas will become!

Another week down in ds106, congrats everyone, you guys are SUPERstars!

For my the third and final assignment bank project of this week I picked an audio assignment. I decided to do the “A Mailchimped Message” assignment. The basic premise of this assignment was to create an audio only ad where you integrate multiple voices together saying one phrase about something that matters to you. I decided to make my ad about UMW since it is such a huge part of my life currently. I began this process by taking multiple recordings of individuals on the iPhone app voice memo. Once I had my recordings complete I uploaded them onto my computer and exported them into iMovie. Within iMovie I trimmed the clips into the smaller phrases and matched them up with the previous clip to avoid large gaps in the ad. Once I finished clipping the four different people’s recordings into a single clip I exported the iMovie file into a MPEG file. For the last step of this assignment process I uploaded my MPEG file onto Soundcloud! Below is my finished product of University of Mary Washington’s unofficial new student ad.

Daily Creates

This week on Daily Creates….

First off I did the prompt “Fruit Face”.

I began by using snapchat to apply a filter that stretches my mouth to take a selfie that would fit on my fruit of choice, an apple. Then I used the photo editing app Pasteify to crop my selfie onto the red delicious! Then I tweeted my masterpiece, and here is the final product.

Next daily create prompt I completed was  “Pronounce This”,

I used Soundcloud to simply record myself pronouncing  Floccinaucinihilification to the best of my ability, which was not all that great. Then I tweeted my work!

For my third and final daily create of the week I chose the “cute animal with a hard truth” activity.

First off I hit google for the cutest puppy picture I could find and saved it to my camera roll. Once I had completed that mission I next used snapchat to add my text bubble and my hard truth to the adorable puppies. First I added the speech bubble, and covered up the pre-existing words in it with a white out tool. Once that was cleared I added my harsh truth that we as people never remember other people’s names when we meet them. Then I tweeted out my adorable puppies, and my unfortunate reality.

Alter Ego Instagram

My second project from the digital story telling assignment bank was from the Web Assignments category. I chose to Create Finsta Instagram.

I decided to take the opportunity to do a very open ended and creative assignment to really involve the super hero theme of our class. I first created a new Instagram just for my alter ego, creating it all in the name of the Green Lantern. I went with the Green Lantern for my super Instagram since his quote really inspired me and is actually the tagline for my blog. Once my new account was set up with Instagram I then customized the biography to inject some personality into this social media platform.

Next, I began searching for some material for my Finsta (Fake Instagram). I posted five different images with captions that remained personal and light hearted, just like my real Instagram account.

After my whole page was set up with account information, a biography, and images I decided to take it one step further and follow some of my friends! I went ahead and followed five of my closest and oldest pals including, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Spiderman. Now that I am Instagram official, and connected to all my pals I can not wait to keep posting my Selfie Sunday pictures! Follow me @greenlantern106, an overview of my page and a link is below!

Old School Photo

For my first activity from the ds106 assignment bank I picked from the Visual Assignments section. I chose The Civil War Photo assignment, The Civil War Photo. For this activity I first tried to get creative with my attire. Unfortunately, I do not have any Civil War era costumes at my fingertips, so I made do with what I had. This consisted of a denim button down top, a navy bath towel, and my roommates cowgirl boots. Somehow this combination made sense in my head, let me know what you think about the final product? Then for the staging of the photo I posed as if I had no clue where the camera was, and with a very stoic facial expression. For the editing process of this assignment I simply applied a black and white filter from my iPhone onto the image. Then just to adjust it slightly from the plain black and white option I raised the level of the black and white to higher on the shadow/dark side of the spectrum. The end result, a hilarious modern day remake of a Civil War era woman.

Weekly Summary

Boot camp week is exactly what I thought it was going to be, time consuming and frustrating mostly due to my lack of tech savviness, but overall full of learning. One of the reasons I took this class was because I want to work on expanding my knowledge of using different multimedia sites, options, and tools. Luckily I had already set up a UMW blog domain from my FSEM class, unfortunately we barely used it so it took me a while to re-familiarize myself with the applications and tools. Then once I had updated my blog, and published it to the ds106 website I started all my introductions! First thing I did was create a new twitter account especially for this class; I found this the easiest because I am pretty familiar with using the platform twitter.

Then I created a Soundcloud account which I had never used before, but was a pretty straight forward process. I set up my account and then just recorded a voice memo on my iPhone and uploaded it from there. It was also very easy, although I had to record my voice memo about 5 times since I hate the sound of my own voice on recording. Then finished with embedding it into my UMW domains blog post.

Then I decided to tackle youtube since this is another platform I have had slight use of before due to using a gmail account, although I had never posted a self recorded video before this class assignment. So I found it easiest to record directly from my laptop photo booth application and then upload it to youtube from there.

Lastly I tackled Flickr, which is a site I had never used nor had any real contact with before. It took me quite a bit of  trial and error before I figured out how it all worked. Once my account was all set and I got the basic idea of the app I posted five images that give a brief look into my life so far. My favorite picture of all is the one of 3 of my friends and I jumped in front of the ocean in Havana, Cuba. This was my most significant summer and quite honestly life experience to date, so I felt it was the most important thing to share with you all.

Jumping for joy on UMW study abroad in Cuba #ds106

Post all of the week one boot camp assignments including, setting up various social media sites and introducing myself across all of them, I compiled them all into a introductory blog post.

Hello World!

Than, I also wrote a blog post on my thoughts of the superhero theme for this upcoming semester. Although I only made a few subtle references throughout my introductions to this theme I am very excited to incorporate it more heavily and more creatively the better I become with the tools I have at hand.

Superhero thoughts

Overall, I learned a lot more than I thought I would have from the very first week of class. I learned how to use three completely new social media platforms I have never encountered before, and I relearned how to use the UMW domain blog system. I was surprised how much harder it was for me to relearn how to post, share, and embed media into the word press application, compared to setting up a bunch of new accounts. The thing that frustrated me the most was embedding all the media elements I had posted on other sites all into one concise blog post, and then re-doing all of that for this weekly summary. I think the repetitive nature of it just frustrated me a little because I had just felt like I completed something, but then I had to do it one more time! Overall I really enjoyed the different nature of this class compared to most of my other courses here at UMW. I love the creative and personal perspective this course uses. Also, now that the accounts are all set up and I have a better understanding of using the blog, I really think I will like the use of multiple platforms to share information. I can not wait to keep increasing my knowledge and skills throughout this course.

Superhero thoughts

I love that we are using the theme superhero for this semester! I grew up with two older brothers both heavily interested in both DC and Marvel comics, movies, etc. So I feel as though I have a ton of resources to pull from to make our activities as creative and fun as possible. My personal favorite superhero currently is Antman because everyone always underestimates him due to his size, but he always prevails. I also think this theme is awesome because it leaves a lot of room to be an individual and express your creative side. To one person a superhero is Batman, but to another a superhero is Mom. There is so much flexibility for us all to have creative and diverse works! I think it will be extremely interesting to see how different people interpret and develop projects while using this theme.

Hello World!

Hello everyone in the ds106 universe! I am Jordan Pamlanye, and I am currently a junior here at UMW! I am apart of the women’s basketball team and I am a psychology major! This has been a summer full of adventure and fun, but it is time to get back to work! I will let my social media introductions do the rest!

Jumping for joy on UMW study abroad in Cuba #ds106

This is a super snapshot of my pals and I on UMW study abroad trip this summer to Cuba! It was a huge part of my summer, so I thought I would share this on Flickr! P.S I am the one all the way to the left!
